P A T I E N C E

The study of the FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT has brought us to consider the word PATIENCE. It is another word (like love, hope, faith) that the world has devalued by giving it another definition. Patience has come to mean a dogged determination to endure by terrific white-knuckled will power and gritting of the teeth in an attitude of resentment and disdain.

PATIENCE according to the Bible is a FRUIT of the Spirit. The word "Fruit" suggests the absence of sweat and labor. You know that if a tree has apple life in it, it will eventually bear apples. It doesn’t do so by struggle. If the Spirit of Christ is in us we can expect the Life of Christ to be lived out in our lives in the same way. The difference would be that we must choose, because we naturally default to our flesh unless we make a deliberate choice. This is indicated by the verse, "If we are going to draw our life from the Spirit, let us stay in step with the Spirit." We have a choice.

PATIENCE is Love for the long haul. It means slow to anger, or far from anger. It means that whatever you do to me you cannot make me hate you, nor can you make me seek revenge or make me hold bitterness or malice toward you. No matter what you do to me I will always seek your highest and best good.

And I will do this with joyfulness, peace and gentleness, because just like the colors of the rainbow, all connect with each other. So the fruit of the Spirit will remain connected with each aspect of the fruit.

We must depend on the Spirit of Christ in us to produce this patience that is supernatural. As people "taught of God," we will see this fruit appear in our lives as we choose to depend upon Him to work this work in us. First there is the blossom and then the green fruit and finally the matured fruit will be evident in our lives. This is how they will know that we belong to Christ in that we ‘love one another’ as He has loved us … FOR THE LONG HAUL.

Let these verses instruct you along with the cassette album. This can truly be a life changing study as the Spirit makes PATIENCE a part of the expression of Christ in you.

THE PASSION OF PATIENCE
by Oswald Chambers

"Though it tarry, wait for it."   Habakkuk 2:3

Patience is not indifference; patience conveys the idea of an immensely strong rock withstanding all onslaughts. The vision of God is the source of patience, because it imparts a moral inspiration. Moses endured, not because he had an ideal of right and duty, but because be had a vision of God. He "endured, as seeing Him Who is invisible."

A man with the vision of God is not devoted to a cause or to any particular issue; he is devoted to God Himself. You always know when the vision is of God because of the inspiration that comes with it; things come with largeness and tonic to the life because everything is energized by God. If God gives you a time spiritually, as He gave His Son actually, of temptation in the wilderness, with no word from Himself at all, endure, and the power to endure is there because you see God.

"Though it tarry, wait for it." The proof that we have the vision is that we are reaching out for more than we have grasped. It is a bad thing to be satisfied spiritually. "What shall I render unto the Lord?" said the Psalmist. "I will take the cup of salvation."

We are apt to look for satisfaction in ourselves - "Now I have got the thing; now I am entirely sanctified; now I can endure." Instantly we are on the road to ruin. Our reach must exceed our grasp. "Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect." If we have only what we have experienced, we have nothing; if we have the inspiration of the vision of God, we have more than we can experience. Beware of the danger of relaxation spiritually.

Patience is an attribute ascribed to God

Ex 34:6 And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, "The LORD, the LORD, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness,

Nu 14:18 `The LORD is slow to anger, abounding in love and forgiving sin and rebellion. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished; he punishes the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation.'

Ne 9:17 & 30 Ne 9:17 They refused to listen and failed to remember the miracles you performed among them. They became stiff-necked and in their rebellion appointed a leader in order to return to their slavery. But you are a forgiving God, gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. Therefore you did not desert them . . . For many years you were patient with them. By your Spirit you admonished them through your prophets. Yet they paid no attention, so you handed them over to the neighboring peoples.

Ps 86:15 But you, O Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.

Ps 103:8 The LORD is compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love.

Ps 145:8 The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love.

Joe 2:13 Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the LORD your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity.

Jon 4:2 He prayed to the LORD, "O LORD, is this not what I said when I was still at home? That is why I was so quick to flee to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity.

Na 1:3 The LORD is slow to anger and great in power; the LORD will not leave the guilty unpunished. His way is in the whirlwind and the storm, and clouds are the dust of his feet

Ro 9:22 What if God, choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath-- prepared for destruction?

The Patience of God is seen in our salvation

Ro 2:4 Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you towards repentance?

1Ti 1:16 But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life.

2Pe 3:15 Bear in mind that our Lord's patience means salvation, just as our dear brother Paul also wrote to you with the wisdom that God gave him.

2Pe 3:9 ¶ The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

Our Patience comes from God

Ga 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

Ro 15:5 ¶ May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus,

2Th 3:5 May the Lord direct your hearts into God's love and Christ's perseverance.

Re 1:9 ¶ I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

Col 1:11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully

2Co 6:6 in purity, understanding, patience and kindness; in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love;

Col 3:12 ¶ Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.

Applied Patience is necessary for living the Christian life

Lu 8:15 But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop.

Lu 21:19 By standing firm you will gain life.

Rom 8:25 But if we hope for what we do not see, with perseverance we wait eagerly for it.

Rom 15:4 For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, so that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope.

1Co 10:12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!

1Th 3:8 For now we really live, since you are standing firm in the Lord.

1Ti 6:11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.

Heb 6:12 We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.

Heb 10:36 For you have need of endurance, so that when you have done the will of God, you may receive what was promised.

Heb 12:1 ¶ Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.

Jas 1:19-20 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, for man's anger does not bring about the righteous life that God desires.

Re 13:10 If anyone is to go into captivity, into captivity he will go. If anyone is to be killed {Some manuscripts anyone kills} with the sword, with the sword he will be killed. This calls for patient endurance and faithfulness on the part of the saints.

Re 14:12 This calls for patient endurance on the part of the saints who obey God's commandments and remain faithful to Jesus.

Our Patience should be evident to others

Pr 14:29 ¶ A patient man has great understanding, but a quick-tempered man displays folly.

Pr 15:18 ¶ A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel.

Pr 16:32 ¶ Better a patient man than a warrior, a man who controls his temper than one who takes a city.

Pr 19:11 ¶ A man's wisdom gives him patience; it is to his glory to overlook an offence.

Pr 25:15 ¶ Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone.

Ec 7:8 The end of a matter is better than its beginning, and patience is better than pride.

2Co 12:12 The things that mark an apostle--signs, wonders and miracles--were done among you with great perseverance.

2Ti 3:10 ¶ You, however, know all about my teaching, my way of life, my purpose, faith, patience, love, endurance,

2Ti 4:2 Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage--with great patience and careful instruction.

1Th 5:14 And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone.

Tit 2:2 Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance.

Jas 5:7 Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is for the autumn and spring rains.

2Pe 1:6 and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness;

Re 2:2 I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked men, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false.

Re 2:19 I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.

Patience is active and necessary in suffering

Ro 5:3-4 Not only so, but we {Or let us} also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.

2Cor 6:3-10 giving no cause for offense in anything, so that the ministry will not be discredited, but in everything commending ourselves as servants of God, in much endurance, in afflictions, in hardships, in distresses, in beatings, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in hunger, in purity, in knowledge, in patience, in kindness, in the Holy Spirit, in genuine love, in the word of truth, in the power of God; by the weapons of righteousness for the right hand and the left, by glory and dishonor, by evil report and good report; regarded as deceivers and yet true; as unknown yet well-known, as dying yet behold, we live; as punished yet not put to death, as sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet making many rich, as having nothing yet possessing all things.

2Thes 1:3-5 We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brethren, as is only fitting, because your faith is greatly enlarged, and the love of each one of you toward one another grows ever greater; therefore, we ourselves speak proudly of you among the churches of God for your perseverance and faith in the midst of all your persecutions and afflictions which you endure. This is a plain indication of God's righteous judgment so that you will be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which indeed you are suffering.

Jas 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.

Jas 5:10-11 Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. As you know, we consider blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job's perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

Ro 12:12 Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.

2Co 1:6 If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer.

2Co 6:4 Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: in great endurance; in troubles, hardships and distresses;

2Th 1:4 Therefore, among God's churches we boast about your perseverance and faith in all the persecutions and trials you are enduring.

1Pe 5:9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.

Re 1:9 ¶ I, John, your brother and companion in the suffering and kingdom and patient endurance that are ours in Jesus, was on the island of Patmos because of the word of God and the testimony of Jesus.

Patience is the foremost evidence of love

1Co 13:4 ¶ Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.

Eph 4:2 ¶ Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.

Loving Patience demonstrated

25 ¶ And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, "Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"26 And He said to him, "What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?"27 And he answered, "YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND; AND YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."28 And He said to him, "You have answered correctly; DO THIS AND YOU WILL LIVE."

29 But wishing to justify himself, he said to Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"

30 Jesus replied and said, "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead.31 "And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.32 "Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.33 "But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion,34 and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.35 "On the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper and said, 'Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I return I will repay you.'

36 "Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers' hands?"37 And he said, "The one who showed mercy toward him." Then Jesus said to him, "Go and do the same."
